Get Back on Track for a New School Year | Sandi Parkey Pink Zebra Independent Consultant

As a Pink Zebra consultant, I am grateful to have the ability to work from home. However, because I run my own business, it’s easy for me to get out of the routine of things and enjoy the summer break, too. But the time has come to get back on track and focus on a new school year.

Start Now to Adjust Better Once School Starts

Can you believe we are already talking about going back to school? It’s crazy how fast the summer break goes by. Sometimes the days are long, but the summer surely moves by fast. Either way, here we are again, and it’s time for us and the kids to get back on a schedule to help make the 2017–2018 school year a success!

It’s important to start by creating a schedule. Pretty soon the kids will be back to a routine of waking up for school, having lunch at the same time five days a week, getting out of school in the afternoon, participating in sporting events, doing homework, getting ready for bed, and, then, doing it all again the next day. While you might not be able to follow this same schedule at home, try to get the kids used to waking up early and having lunch and dinner around the time they will once school begins. By having at least these items taken care of, it will make it easier for everyone once the school year actually begins.

This is especially important since morning wake-up times and bedtimes are the worst to get back on schedule. Since the kids have been used to staying up late and sleeping in over the past few months during summer, their sleep schedules (and yours too!) are probably out of whack. Therefore, start moving up wake-up times and bedtimes. Instead of going to bed around 10 p.m. tonight, aim this week to go to bed at 9:30 p.m. and waking up a half hour earlier than you have been. Then, next week, try going to bed at 9 p.m. and adjusting your wake-up time accordingly. Keep moving the times until you’re on the schedule you will be for school.
