Spring to It! Learn How to Start a Garden | Sandi Parkey Pink Zebra Independent Consultant

Have you always wanted to create a garden but just never started? Make spring 2021 the season you start your first garden!

Besides pretty flowers and edible goodies, gardening can bring about a number of other benefits, including:

  • Building strength
  • Improving memory
  • Reducing stress
  • Fighting disease
  • Boosting mood

Whether you are a beginner or just want to get back to basics, let’s take a look at some tips on how you can start a garden this season:

First, Plan

You are going to want to think about what exactly you want to start planting. Do you want to plant a vegetable garden? What about a flower garden? Or maybe you just want to start with a small herb garden?

You are going to need to decide what you want to plant before you get started on your garden, as each type of garden has different needs.

Second, Choose a Location

It is all about location, location, location! If you are planting a vegetable or flower garden, you are more than likely going to need to pick a spot that receives around six to eight hours of sunlight each day.

In addition, you need to pick a spot that is pretty flat so that you do not have to deal with a sloping garden, which can end up costing you in the end.

Third, Prepare

Once you have chosen your type of garden and its location, you then want to get the ground ready for planting! You want to start by removing any sod that might be covering the area. Then, you want to add organic matter (such as dead leaves and faded flowers) to help improve the soil, which is key to growing any type of garden.

Next, be sure to cultivate the soil through tilling and/or digging so that seeds are able to be safely planted and fueled for growth.

And Now Let’s Plant!

Now that you have your soil ready, it is now time to plant. Be sure to read the instructions, as each seed needs different depths in order to grow.

You also want to be sure you are watering the right amount each week, as too little or too much water can ruin a garden.

Happy gardening!
