Transitioning Out Of Your Boring or Stressful Job

There’s a popular quote that states, “love what do you, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Unfortunately, many people in today’s society are stuck working boring or stressful jobs that they don’t enjoy. In fact, about 8 in every 10 Americans report that their jobs are stressful in some way. The good news is, it’s possible to transition out of your current job smoothly, without making any enemies. Don’t keep returning to that old cubicle where you stare at the clock every ten minutes hoping it’s time to go home. Your dream job awaits! Here are a few tips to make transitioning out of our old job quick and painless:

  1. Give your employer plenty of heads-up. Most people recommend letting your employer know two weeks in advance, but if you know before then, tell them. They will appreciate the extra time to fill the gap. If you really want brownie points, offer to help find your replacement! This will take a bit of the pressure off of your boss’s shoulders. You can give your two weeks’ notice in writing, but it’s always best to sit down with your employer and speak with them face to face. Be honest and let them know that you’re taking another opportunity that you will thoroughly enjoy.

  2. Be sure to have an emergency fund. Being an entrepreneur is an exciting journey! However, it may take a little bit of time before the money starts coming in. Create a savings fund to fall back on while you’re working your old job, just in case. This will eliminate stress and give you the peace of mind you need to make the job transition. Be sure the emergency fund can sustain you for at least a month – but the more you save up, the better! You may not even need the fund, but something to fall back on is always a safe idea.

  3. Finish your work. If you have unfinished projects, don’t dump them on the shoulders of the person replacing you! Get as much finished as you possibly can – and then ask your boss or supervisor if there is anything else you can accomplish before you leave. This shows initiative and responsibility, and you want to leave with your superior’s respect! Create a detailed list of your responsibilities to give to your replacement. By giving them the list, they will learn the ropes quicker and your boss will be happy.
