Turning Lemons Into Lemonade | Sandi Parkey Pink Zebra Independent Consultant
April is supposed to be filled with Easter egg hunts, proms and time spent enjoying time with family and friends. Right now it’s consisting of staying home and social distancing—hardly the activities of our dreams.
As a result, it can certainly take a toll on our mental health—and mood. However, we need to remember that in times like this, it is all at how we look at things.
Yes, it can be easy to be disappointed right now about having to cancel plans and put memories on hold. But rather than being upset about what we cannot do, why don’t we change things around and focus on what we can do when it comes to social distancing so that we can make it a positive experience?
Out With the Negative and in With the Positive!
First, we need to change our perspective about the situation and remember that life happens. There are going to be things in life that we cannot control, and this situation is a good reminder of that.
It’s important to focus on the things we can control, such as our reaction to unexpected times. It is important to stay positive—not just for yourself but for your loved ones, too, as positivity (like negativity) can be contagious.
Begin to live a more positive life through this experience by:
- Starting a gratitude journal
- Taking time for self-care
- Making time to laugh and tell jokes
- Practicing meditation
- Waking up with a good attitude
Second, remember that social distancing is really just physical distancing. You can still make time for friends and family who do not live with you.
It just might have to be in a different way. For instance, you can have morning coffee with a friend over Skype. Or you could start a book club and host it online!
Finally, use this time of social distancing to reconnect with the loved ones in your home. Start having family meals together again. Establish a family game night.
Social distancing could be giving you the gift of getting to know your family again!
