Are you already feeling behind and overwhelmed when it comes to preparing for trick-or-treaters? Well, that’s why I’m offering up some tips to help you survive Halloween this year with your kids!

Overcome the Halloween Anxiety

Halloween can be a really fun holiday enjoyed by all! In fact, last year, according to one survey approximately 69.1 percent of respondents participated in Halloween activities. But while preparing for the 31st, things can get pretty crazy and stressful quickly if you don’t plan ahead.

First, put together a “Halloween” calendar for October. Between pumpkin patches, finding/making costumes, fall festivals, trunk or treats, etc., your calendar can get pretty full—fast. Therefore, go ahead and prepare your calendar now with all the activities you want to attend. You can even prioritize the activities by color like:

  • Orange = Must Do
  • Red = Want to Do
  • Black = If There’s Time

Also, be sure to spread everything out so that you aren’t jamming everything into one week or even one weekend. That is too much on you, and that is too much for your kids. Remember, holidays are meant to be a time to spend some quality hours with family and friends.

Second, start looking for the costume now, if you haven’t already. If your child hasn’t mentioned what he or she wants to be, then try coming up with ideas. That way you can start your costume search at thrift stores, consignment sales and yard sales (where the costumes will be at their cheapest) if you don’t feel like making it—or can’t.

Finally, enjoy the moments. Carve (or even paint) a pumpkin together, or watch your favorite Halloween movie on Friday nights. My personal favorites are “Hocus Pocus” and “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”
